Charles Edward Yate was a major figure in Frontier and Central Asian affairs, as was his brother Arthur Campbell Yate. He served in the 1880-1881 Afghan War and on the Afghan Frontier Commission, 1884-1888. He was the British Commissioner for the Russian-Afghan frontier and Consul-General for Khorasan and Seistan at Mashad, Persia from 1893 to 1898. He also served as Chief Commissioner for Baluchistan, 1900-1905.
