Ephemera

Christmas lunch scene in India, titled ‘Absent Friends’.

Christmas lunch scene in India, titled ‘Absent Friends’.

Circa 1860.

Chromolithographic souvenir. 130 x 100mm. (5 x 4 ins).

Verso printed in outline with artist’s impression of the star of the Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India and profile of Queen Victoria surrounded by the legend ‘Heaven’s light our guide’. Further text ‘In India now they hail the feast...’.

Stylistically this lunch scene bears comparison to illustrations in Curry and Rice (on Forty Plates), or the Ingredients of Social Life at 'Our Station' in India, Captain George Francklin Atkinson, London [1858]. However, the order of chivalry, Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India was not instituted until 1861, placing the date of this card a few years later.
