Holmes, Randolph Bezzant (1888-1973).

Mountains near Kanchenjunga.

Circa 1940.

Randolph Holmes was a commercial photographer who continued the business established by his father, William D. Holmes in Peshawar during the 1890s.

The firm, which continued until the 1940s, was best known for views of the North-West Frontier, and acted as official photographers to the Afghan Campaign of 1919. The principal archive of Randolph Holmes' business life is held by the Macmillan Brown Library, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. This small group of watercolours, acquired from his estate in the early 1990s, testify to his skill as an amateur artist.
