A princess seated on a palace terrace, turning towards her hand-maidens.

Dressed in a transparent jama over pink pantaloons, she is adorned with rows of pearls and precious gems, her chair decorated with jewels. Female musicians kneel to the right, one playing a tambur, another beating a drum. In the background, a doorway to the palace and, beyond the terrace wall, a lake covered in lotus blossoms. Pahari, mid-nineteenth century.

For a thorough and comprehensive study of Pahari painting see W. G. Archer: Indian Paintings from the Punjab Hills, London 1973.
